The Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman is one of 27 such centers in the State. The center is governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents and is accredited by the Council on Occupational Education. Full-time programs are approved for veterans' training by the State Office for Veterans' Education.
The primary purpose of the center is to provide occupational and technical training for area residents. Instruction is designed to prepare the student for employment or to enable an employed person to advance by providing the needed skills and technical training. Any person who is 18 or older and has a job objective may apply for admission to the center. We also offer duel enrollment for high school students in Roane and Morgan counties. Financial Aid is available to those who qualify, such as the Director's Scholarship, the Lottery funded Wilder-Naifeh Technical Skills Grant, the Pell Grant, and the Tennessee Student Assistance Award.
Three types of training are offered:
Preparatory Training...Instruction in a specific occupational area designed to provide the skills and knowledge needed to get a job. The current full time programs offered are: Automotive Technology, Business System Technology, Cosmetology, Diesel Powered Equipment Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Computer Information Technology, Machine Tool Technology, Practical Nursing, and Welding.Supplemental Training...Evening classes for employed workers designed to help them advance in their job. Current evening classes available are: Certified Nursing Assistant, Welding Technology, and Electrical Apprenticeship.
On-Line Training. . . The Tennessee Board of Regents technology centers, community colleges, and universities have joined in a collaborative, strategic planning effort to offer the Regents Online Degree Programs (RODP) and the Regents Online Continuing Education and Workforce Development (ROCE). Online programs offered through TTC Harriman are Business Systems Technology, Drafting and CAD Technology (DCT), and Computer Operations Technology. Roane State Community College is a regionally accredited two-year college providing transfer curricula, career-preparation programs, and non-credit education.
While the main campus is in Harriman, Roane State also has campuses in Anderson, Campbell, Cumberland, Fentress, Loudon, Morgan and Scott counties. The college also provides health sciences education in Knox and Blount counties.
Companies who choose Roane County may attract employees from neighboring counties. Because Roane State has campuses in the communities it serves and provides state-of-the-art distance education courses, employees can receive education and training at locations convenient to their workplaces or homes.
Health-care companies employ thousands of Roane State graduates. The college is a leading provider of health sciences education, producing graduates in fields such as nursing, dental hygiene technology, radiologic technology and opticianry. In 2006-2007, the job placement rate for students in Roane State's health sciences programs was 95 percent.
Roane State was ranked number one in the nation by Community College Week (June 19, 2006 for 2005 graduates) in the number of associate's degrees awarded for science technologies/technicians.
The college's programs include training students to work as payroll clerks, database administrators, administrative assistants, managers, in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) jobs and in many other business occupations. In 2006-07, the job placement rate for Roane State students in career-prep programs was 93 percent.
The college's business career preparation programs are accredited by major regional and national organizations.
Roane State also provides services to small businesses. The Oak Ridge Small Business Development Center, which is administered by Roane State, offers confidential one-on-one counseling with potential business owners and existing companies. Most services are free.
