Regional Businesses Treat Educators to a Lunch & Learn Summer Series
Tuesday June 01, 2010
Kingston, Tenn. - It's not too late for area educators to sign up for the second annual "Educators in the Workplace Lunch & Learn" at area businesses.
Partners in the regional economic development initiative Innovation Valley Inc. are sponsoring "Educators in the Workplace Lunch & Learn" series this summer for teachers and guidance counselors in Blount, Knox, Loudon and Roane counties and Oak Ridge. The Lunch & Learn series is an opportunity for educators to meet with business people in a workplace setting.
Last year, almost 70 educators participated, and this year, the number is well over 100. However, a few spots are still available, and the partners would like to see as many educators participate as possible.
Lunch will be provided by the company hosting the event and members of various departments within the businesses will provide information about the company, workplace culture and specifics on ways to connect what the students learn in the classroom and what is required in the workplace. Company representatives will offer a tour of the workplace followed by a question and answer session.
Educators will benefit from discovering new ways to show students the relevance of what they learn in the classroom, hearing ideas about incorporating workplace expectations into the classroom and observing firsthand how businesses operate. Some school districts have agreed to award in-service credits for participation. Educators should check with their district. Businesses will benefit by helping sustain a skilled future workforce and making connections with educators to further support the education of that workforce.
The Knoxville Chamber, Blount Education Initiative, The Roane Alliance, Loudon County Economic Development Agency, and Oak Ridge Economic Partnership, organized the Lunch & Learn series. Educators from the five areas are welcome to participate in any of the events.
