Roane Chamber Banquet Scheduled for April 25th

The Roane Chamber of Commerce banquet will feature Dr. Thom Mason, Director, Oak Ridge National Laboratory as the keynote speaker.

      The 62nd Roane County Chamber of Commerce banquet will be held on April 25th, 2008 and will feature Dr. Thom Mason, Director, Oak Ridge National Laboratory as the keynote speaker.

    "As a world-class scientist who has already made a mark in the research community, Thom represents the future of ORNL," according to Dr. John Petersen, President, University of Tennessee and Vice-Chair for UT-Batelle.  Oak Ridge National Laboratory is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy's Office of Science.  Dr. Mason has been heavily involved in the Spallation Neutron Source, leading the construction and design of the $1.4 billion accelerator. As director of the lab, he is in charge of the world's leading facility in the field of neutron scattering and materials research. 

    Dr. Mason has a distinguished academic and research portfolio.  He was an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow, an Associate of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, an Associate Professor at the University of Toronto, a Senior Scientist at Riso National Laboratory in Denmark, and a Postdoctoral Fellow with Bell Laboratories. A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Dr. Mason holds American citizenship. He received degrees from Dalhousie University and McMaster University in Canada.

    Dr. Mason lives with his wife Jennifer and two sons in Oak Ridge. He serves as Chair of the Oak Ridge Public Schools Foundation, which helped raise $55 million to renovate Oak Ridge High School.

    The banquet will be held at the Whitestone Country Inn beginning with a wine reception and silent auction at 6 pm and dinner to follow at 7.  Awards presented at the banquet include the Distinguished Service Award, the Athena Award and the Business of the Year Award.  

    The deadline for submitting nominations for these awards is March 31st.  (Copies of nomination forms can be downloaded on this website - see downloads link). 

    Seating for the banquet is limited and available on a first-come, first-serve basis with RSVP requested by April 11th.  Tickets are priced at $100 and tables of eight can be reserved.  A limited number of sponsorships are available for this event.
