This Year’s Teachers Supply Closet Effort Begins...with an Expanded Mission
Wednesday August 05, 2009
Kingston, TN -- The Roane Alliance and Roane State Community College officially announced the beginning of their yearly drive to collect supplies and cash donations for the Teachers' Supply Closet - a highly-popular and highly-successful annual effort to help Roane County public school teachers.
Now in its seventh year, the Roane County Teachers' Supply Closet provides a one-day free "shopping" experience where public schools teachers may shop for basic supplies, arts and crafts materials, classroom supplies donated by area businesses and individuals. Some items frequently needed for classrooms include: pencils, pens, copy paper, ruled writing paper, hand sanitizer, paper towels, markers, scissors, tape, tissues, construction paper, and band-aids. Other items that are very useful are tennis balls, hole punchers, computer CDs, overhead projector markers, and rubber bands.
This year, though, the "closet" is being expanded to also include some other pressing needs. In addition to the usual supplies for the teachers, cash donations will be used to purchase some new technology and training materials that are needed in today's changing education world. Items purchased could include such things as software, specialized textbooks, state-of-the-art white boards, or other needed items that are not included in the schools' budget.
"The Teachers Supply Closet is a great way for area businesses and individuals to help Roane County teachers acquire additional supplies and equipment for their classrooms," said Allen Lutz, Education and Workforce Development Specialist for the Roane Alliance. "Donations are greatly appreciated by the teachers and help make student activities and learning more effective."
Donations of cash as well as supplies can be dropped off at The Roane Alliance building at 1209 N. Kentucky Street in Kingston. The date teachers can pick up the supplies at Roane State Community College in Harriman will be announced later. For more information or to donate items, call The Roane Alliance at 865-376-2093.
