High School Career Exploration Day, April 23, 2010

The 2010 career fair is a great Success!

Students from the five Roane County high schools (Harriman, Midway, Oliver Springs, Roane County and Rockwood High Schools) came to the Career Fair in which thirty-five organizations participated.

The students met new people (business leaders, entrepreneurs, and employers), learned about careers they may never have considered before, and began thinking about a career path.

The career fair was a great success, as described in the below comments written by students. The students also recommended next year that an even larger variety of careers be represented and they have more time at the career fair, one hour was not long enough.

The career fair was possible because of the combined support of The Roane Alliance, Roane County Chamber of Commerce Education IVI-logoCommittee, Roane County Schools, Roane State Community College, and the many businesses that participated.  A special thanks goes to Innovation Valley for its support of the career fair and the Education Matters! Initiative.

Some of the many student comments:

  • I learned how to write a resume and why to write a resume. A resume can help you and an interview with the company you are trying to get a job from. Resumes have most of your previous job experience included. There are often different types of resumes to choose from. (Roane County High School)

  • I had been looking forward to the career fair at Roane State for at least a week before, and when I finally got there my overexcitement was justified. I found everything that I was looking for, and much much more. I had many questions when I first entered the gymnasium, and I left with very few remaining. The only inquires that were left unanswered were the ones that I'll have to answer on my own with time. I also enjoyed it because all the people I talked with were extremely helpful, informative, and downright kind. (Rockwood High School)

  • The trip helped in a way that I realized I want and need to development a plan or path for my life past high school. (Roane County High School)

  • This was a wonderful experience to see so many careers and opportunities. I would like to have more career days and to have more careers to choose from. I believe we should have more time to talk to the business representatives. If we have more time to talk we have more of an opportunity to see what we want to with our future. This was an excellent experience and I hope it will be made available to seniors next school year. It showed us what the possibilities there are. Considering a career is important to your future. It is also important in planning for your future. I wish we had other career fairs or days during the school year to explore careers and learning about the career decision process. Thank you for giving us such an opportunity and making it easier to start selecting a career. (Rockwood High School)

  • At the job fair, I learned of many interesting career options. My favorite area was the writers booth where I received the opportunity to use my writing skills to earn a potential scholarship. (Midway High School)

  • My favorite place that was in the career fair was the area suited for the nursing homes. I would never have visited this booth if it wasn't for the bright colors and all the toys on the table. Things that caught my attention helped me realize what working with all these people is what the jobs about. The many different jobs in this field were incredible. (Roane County High School)

  • The health care portion of the fair opened my eyes to the things I am going to have to accomplish in the future. . (Roane County High School)

  • TN Technology Center of Harriman was the most interesting because its everything I'm interested in. The exhibit was of a machinist which is a person who creates from metal. TN Tech Center also offers automotive classes, welding classes, nursing classes, and various business classes. They also help with job placement and the cost to attend in not that high. (Roane County High School)

  • I got a lot of good tips and ideas on how to make my interests and positive sides look good and presentable for future employers. . (Roane County High School)

  • I enjoyed talking to people about careers that I have thought about going into. I also talked to people about other jobs as well. I am not sure what career I would like to have, but this gave me a better look. I learned a lot of things about many jobs. I learned about working at places that my family has encouraged me to go to, that I haven't put much thought into until now. They have been telling me that I should get a degree in engineering. I am now considering more options about what to do with my life. (Rockwood High School)

  • The job fair of 2010 was very thought out and well developed. I enjoyed visiting all the many people and seeing displays. Thanks for inviting the junior class! Overall the Exploration Fair was amazing and very helpful at opening eyes for the future. (Roane County High School)

  • The job fair was very fun and I really did enjoy getting to go. Being able to write a resume and dress for an interview and getting to go to the college was a very fun experience. There were a lot of jobs I Realized I was interested in that I had never even considered learning about. The different job fields and opportunities that were available really made the trip a lot better than I thought it was going to be. I ended up being interested in most of the jobs I didn't originally plan on learning about. (Roane County High School)

  • I liked the chance I got to learn things that I will definitely use in the future when I prepare to start my career. Before the job fair, I did not know anything about resumes or how to go about doing an interview. So the process leading up to the job fair taught me a lot of valuable lessons. (Roane County High School)

  • It showed me I have to be thinking about my future a lot more. Because in order to do half the stuff I want, I have to do good in school so I can move onto college. It was a big awaking that I personally really needed. I'm glad I got the opportunity. (Rockwood High School)

  • The job fair wasn't all business though, I made a bet with a sailor and won. I seen a lot of people I knew. I even won a $25 gift card! To think, I was considering skipping school that day, I'm so glad I didn't. (Midway High School)
